MAGNUS PLANE

Magnus Effect

The Magnus effect is an observable phenomenon that is commonly associated with a spinning object moving through the air or another fluid. The path of the spinning object is deflected in a manner that is not present when the object is not spinning.

Different Types of Designs to generate Lift

1. Long Cylinder

In long cylinder Magnus effect can be seen very highly and the force generated is also high. Torque provided to long cylinder is relatively less.

2. Sphere

Sphere shape objects can also produce magnus effects ,like soccer balls , tennis balls etc . But it cannot produce a high lift, so not used in magnus plane.

3. Rectangular

It is similar to cylindrical but here a rectangular plate by rotating at high speed, it seems to be cylindrical , it requires more torque , less moment of inertia ,less lift.

4. Cylinder-Aerofoil Combination

It is combination of both cylindrical and normal aerofoil ,it generates very good lift ,drag will be more , very difficult to manufacture.
